Curious George (2006)

Curious George is a cartoon update of the 40s children's books by Margaret and H A Rey. For those who missed them, the story concerns an inquisitive monkey rescued from the jungle by a hapless adventurer, voiced by Will Ferrell. Once in the big city, George's curiosity lands him in all kinds of scrapes. But Ferrell's hero is never far behind to pick up the pieces and save the day.

Exiles (2006)

In this freewheeling road movie Romain Duris plays the young hipster Zano, who impulsively decides to drop everything and make his first visit to Algeria, where his grandfather was an anti-colonialist activist. Zano's girlfriend Naima, also of Arab descent, nonchalantly agrees to come on the trip, and the passionate if volatile couple head across France and Spain to Africa, by train, foot, lorry, bus and ferry, en route encountering immigrants heading in the opposite direction in search of work.

Brick (2006)

With his low-budget debut Brick, director Rian Johnson deconstructs traditional film noir and rebuilds it in a modern landscape. Gone are the trilby-donning tough guys in dark alleys in favour of grungy teens sloping through the halls of a California high school.

Tony Takitani (2006)

Based on a Haruki Murakami short story, Tony Takitani is a dreamlike and evocative meditation on loneliness. Left to bring himself up by his touring musician father, Tony's solitude lasts well into middle age, when he suddenly falls for and marries the fashion-obsessed Eiko. When she dies in a car accident, however, her roomful of clothes become a mausoleum for his shortlived happiness. Muted and idiosyncratic, Jun Ichikawa's film is nonetheless an exquisite work

United 93 (2006)

On 11th September 2001, 44 people boarded Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco. 33 were regular passengers. Seven were crew. Four were hijackers. As two planes crashed into the World Trade Centre and another into the Pentagon, the citizens on board United Airways Flight 93 had to decide whether to sit tight or try to take back the plane. Writer/director Paul Greengrass sifts through the facts and theories to present what he thinks happened next, in United 93.

The Lady Vanishes (1938)

This classic Alfred Hitchock film marked the end of his career in the United Kingdom, and he goes out with style. It’s a comedy, romance and mystery-thriller that takes place on a train going through the mountains of Europe. The film still looks as fresh and funny as it must have done in 1938: what does the strangling of a Tyrolean street singer have to do with the tweedy English lady in the over-crowded hotel, and why does everyone on a train deny ever having seen the lady in question? There's a sheer pleasure in watching the way the plot turns so smoothly round these questions, and it's compounded by Launder & Gilliat's consistently witty dialogue and the all-round excellence of the cast.
