Palace Digital Fund

A new campaign has been launched to bring Harwich’s iconic cinema into the digital age. The cost of the new digital equipment will be about £55,000 and the Electric Palace Trust aims to raise the money by November 2011 when the cinema celebrates its centenary.

The Electric Palace Trust is planning for a full programme of special events to raise the funds needed. The campaign kicked off with a recent charity screening of Clive Owen’s new film The Boys are Back. This raised £2,400 and the Palace will stage five more screenings of the film on the weekend of February 26, 27 and 28, with all the net proceedings going to the fund.

Many thanks to the organisers of the ‘Mamma Mia’ evening with Abbalicious, held at the Harwich Park Pavilion on Friday 16th July. They held a collection at the end of the concert in aid of the Palace Digital Fund.  Many thanks for their donation of £70 plus.

The cinema will retain the two 60 year old Kalee 21 projectors which currently are used to show new and old 35mm films so that in future when new releases will all be digital, it will still be possible to screen pre-digital-age films such as those from the National Archive of the British Film Institute. Over the years the Electric Palace has built up a very good working relationship with the BFI because it can project these historic films on the class of machines on which they were projected at first release.

Further funds to maintain and repair this historic cinema are needed. Please support the Electric Palace by:

The Electric Palace Appeal 2007

An Appeal was launched in November 2006 by the new Patron of the Electric Palace Trust, Hollywood screen actor Clive Owen, to finance an essential repairs programme that will remove the Palace from the English Heritage At Risk Register.  Thanks to the efforts and generosity of many individuals and organisations nearly £17,000 has been raised. The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a grant of £50,000 for essential repairs including installation of supplementary weight-bearing main metal beams. The main weight-bearing metal beams that support the frontage, foyer and projection room were deteriorating. The grant ensured definitive resolution of these problems and the future of the building was secured as a functioning community cinema and venue for small scale theatrical and musical events.

Many people have helped with the Electric Palace Appeal 2007 either financially or by giving their time and expertise. Below is a list of events and organisations who have raised money for the Appeal. Individuals who have donated money are not named on the web site to protect their privacy.

We would like to thank Our Patron Clive Owen for launching the Appeal with a Gala screening of Children of Men, UEFA Cup Final Introduction Location Fee from ITV Sport and proceeds from Elizabeth:The Golden Age pre-release Charity Screening with thanks to Universal Pictures.
