Spring Sunday Special
Spring’s Sunday Special at the Electric Palace on Sunday April 2nd has a distinctly Italian theme. Bread and Tulips (12A) starts at 4pm. Echoes of Shirley Valentine can be found in this gentle view of Italian life. Licia Maglietta plays Rosalba, who on a family holiday gets separated from her family; Venice provides the colourful backdrop to her life-changing decisions. Supper will then be served at the popular Quayside Restaurant at the Pier Hotel, followed at 7.30 by Agatha and the Storm (15), a keenly-paced, zanily-plotted sex comedy full of extraordinary characters. Tickets for the two films and supper are £18 and have to be booked in advance on 01255 241212. Tickets for the individual films will be on sale at the Electric Palace Box Office half an hour before the programmes start.

Murnau’s 1926 masterpiece, ‘Faust’ comes to Electric Palace with live music

On Sunday, 20th March 2005, Harwich’s Electric Palace and the newly renovated Pier Hotel Restaurant are combining for another cinematic and gastronomic Sunday Special package. Either side of supper at the new look Pier will be a specially chosen feast of cinema. First up at 3.30pm is Vanity Fair, a sumptuous adaptation of Thackeray’s novel by director of Monsoon Wedding, Mira Nair.

After a break for supper at The Pier Restaurant between 6.00pm and 7.30pm, the film programme resumes at the Electric Palace at 7.30pm with a rare opportunity to see FW Murnau’s silent epic masterpiece, Faust, accompanied by live music composed and performed Geoff Smith on multi dulcimers with Philippe Barnes on flute.

Murnau’s adaptation of Goethe’s legendary tale achieves a palpable atmosphere of excitement, evil and temptation and ranks as his highest achievement, alongside Nosferatu and Sunrise. Inspirational direction is complemented by a highly talented cast, stunning camerawork, innovative lighting and astounding special effects that were decades ahead of their time. Geoff Smith’s internationally acclaimed score to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari proved to be the most successful live cinema event since the end of the silent era. According to The Sunday Times, Smith’s new composition for Faust "yanks the tradition of silent movie accompaniment spectacularly back to the future". Don’t miss this date in a national city tour from London to Edinburgh when Faust comes to Harwich!

Christine is Guest of Honour at Palace!

Chairman of Tendring Council, Christine Turner who was made an MBE in the 2005 New Year’s Honours, came to the Electric Palace Cinema on Sunday 23 January to watch ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’ as a guest of the Harwich Electric Palace Trust. Secretary of HEPT, Colin Crawford explained that, whilst attending a function before Christmas, Mrs Turner admitted that she had never been to the Electric Palace Cinema at Kings Quay Street, Harwich. Eager to remedy this situation, the charitable Trust that is behind the cinema invited Mrs Turner to a screening of her choice. Before watching the hit movie for last weekend, Mrs Turner and her guests were shown the cinema website, www.electricpalace.com where the ongoing film programme and other events, such as jazz concerts and special film events are on display along with historical information, membership details and practical directions. When thanking the Trust for their invitation Mrs Turner said "although it was a very cold night, what a lovely warm welcome we received. This was my first visit and I'm sure it will not be my last. I was so impressed with the theatre and with the way it has been bought back to its former glory. You can be sure I will be telling many people about it. The people of Harwich are so lucky to have it and I hope you will carry on getting the support that is needed to keep this small piece of history in your Town".
