On Sunday, 20th March 2005, Harwich’s Electric Palace and the newly renovated Pier Hotel Restaurant are combining for another cinematic and gastronomic Sunday Special package. Either side of supper at the new look Pier will be a specially chosen feast of cinema. First up at 3.30pm is Vanity Fair, a sumptuous adaptation of Thackeray’s novel by director of Monsoon Wedding, Mira Nair.

After a break for supper at The Pier Restaurant between 6.00pm and 7.30pm, the film programme resumes at the Electric Palace at 7.30pm with a rare opportunity to see FW Murnau’s silent epic masterpiece, Faust, accompanied by live music composed and performed Geoff Smith on multi dulcimers with Philippe Barnes on flute.

Murnau’s adaptation of Goethe’s legendary tale achieves a palpable atmosphere of excitement, evil and temptation and ranks as his highest achievement, alongside Nosferatu and Sunrise. Inspirational direction is complemented by a highly talented cast, stunning camerawork, innovative lighting and astounding special effects that were decades ahead of their time. Geoff Smith’s internationally acclaimed score to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari proved to be the most successful live cinema event since the end of the silent era. According to The Sunday Times, Smith’s new composition for Faust "yanks the tradition of silent movie accompaniment spectacularly back to the future". Don’t miss this date in a national city tour from London to Edinburgh when Faust comes to Harwich!
